Discover Louise Eugénie Veuve Puisard, founder of the first viticulture school
Widow of a trader, the role played by Madame Puisard was essential in the sharing of knowledge and the prosperity of Champagne.
In 1919, the Great War followed by the phylloxera epidemic destroyed most of the Champagne vineyards. To get the machine going again, trained people were needed.
Louise Eugénie and Jules Arthur Puisard, wealthy merchants, decided that year to donate all their fortune and all their assets (buildings, cellars, lands) with one single condition: the opening of the first viticulture school.
Indeed, the development of a bottle of Champagne is a very long and mysterious creative process. Only a few large houses possessed all these manufacturing secrets at the beginning of the last century.
This viticulture school was born in 1927 in Avize and still exists more than 100 years later. By bequeathing her fortune during her lifetime to build the first Champagne school, the Veuve Puisard made it possible from 1927 to pass on this know-how to several generations of winegrowers who were thus able to become independent by creating their own brand.
Subsequently, in 1952, Sanger was born, a cooperative of former students, which operates among other things with grapes from the campus estate. Champagne Sanger produces approximately 100,000 bottles each year.
Paying tribute to Louise Eugénie Veuve Puisard
The Champagne Wine School in Avize (Avize Viti Campus) celebrated the 100th anniversary of this donation in 2019. Every year, students come to lay flowers on the tomb of the Puisard couple as a token of thanks.
Today, the Louise Eugénie cuvée pays tribute to the generous donor who founded the school. At the time, winemaking was done in barrels. Thus, this cuvée is composed of 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Meunier vinified in oak barrels.
